Getting started
Which permissions does the app ask for, and why?
The app requests permissions
one at a time during setup, and everything is optional — the app works with whatever you allow:
- Motion & Fitness — to count your steps and estimate distance and calories.
- Apple Health / Google Fit — to fold in your device (and smartwatch) step data for accuracy.
- Location — only when you map a walk, run or hike.
- Notifications — for the optional reminders you turn on.
You can change any of these anytime in your phone's Settings.
My step count looks different from another app, or shows 0
Steps come from your phone's motion sensor and Apple Health / Google Fit, and the app keeps the higher of the two so you're never under-counted. Note that step counting needs a real device — a simulator/emulator won't report steps. If the count seems stuck, open the app to refresh, and make sure Motion & Fitness permission is granted.
Walking plans & coach
How do the walking plans work? Are they free?
Your first walking plan is free — generating it and completing all seven days costs nothing. When you want a new plan (a fresh week / new goals) you can: watch a short video (free), make a one-time purchase, or subscribe to Premium for unlimited plans with no ads. Every new plan is fresh and progressive, so it never repeats the same routine.
What does the AI coach actually do?
It builds a personalized 7-day plan around your goal (weight loss, fitness, or maintenance), with warm-up, main-set and cool-down segments. During a walk it gives live voice coaching, comparing your real pace to the plan and cheering you on.
Purchases & subscriptions
How do I restore a purchase?
Open the paywall or your Profile and tap Restore purchase. Restores use the Apple ID (iPhone) or Google account (Android) you bought with — make sure you're signed in with the same account.
How do I cancel or manage my subscription?
Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, so you manage them there:
- iPhone: Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ Subscriptions ▸ StepCounter.com.
- Android: Google Play ▸ profile ▸ Payments & subscriptions ▸ Subscriptions.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. You keep Premium until the end of the paid period.
My purchase says "pending" (Ask to Buy)
If Ask to Buy or parental approval is enabled, the purchase stays pending until it's approved. Once approved it unlocks automatically — no need to buy again. If you were charged but nothing unlocked, tap Restore purchase or email us.
Water, BMI & reminders
Water tracker and BMI
Log your water with quick-add buttons or a custom amount, set your daily goal, and turn on optional hydration reminders. For BMI, enter your height and weight to see your BMI, category, and a history chart over time.
How do I turn reminders on or off?
Open Profile ▸ Notifications. You can toggle the daily walk reminder, water reminders, a weekly weigh-in reminder, and step-progress updates independently. They're all off by default and only ask for notification permission when you enable one.
Privacy & data
Is my data private?
Your steps, routes, weight and water data stay
on your device — we don't run servers that collect them. Ads are served by Google, which asks your permission before using your advertising identifier. Full details are in our
Privacy Policy.
The home-screen widget
Add the StepCounter.com widget from your home screen (long-press ▸ add widget). Choose to show just your steps, or steps plus calories and distance — it stays up to date through the day.
